Manfred Mann : Soul of Mann
His Master's Voice, CLP 3594 (UK, 1967)

This is a recent Euro bin score. Mainly picked it up for the cover art and the hope of maybe finding a decent cut or two. "Soul" and "Instrumentals" in the title... a track called "LSD"... all elements that hold promise despite the fact that I associate Manfred Mann with easy pop cack.
Well, this album took me by surprise. Knocked the wind out of me. It's first rate instro pop jazz. Great arrangements, killer originals. Makes you wonder what went wrong later. Anyway - we got to talk about this on the exotica-list and that's how I decided to share a rip of this album.
As someone pointed out, this is now available as a CD. While I normally don't share reissued albums I make an exception this time : I had already done most of the work (which is a drag - you can't imagine what a chore ripping LPs is) and, as you will hear, the vinyl's condition is far from excellent. So now you can listen to the sounds and if you like what you hear (which I'm sure of) you can either buy the CD or shell out and get a decent original copy.

BTW, all my shares get a spin on the Nitty Gritty record cleaning machine before ripping (thanks to my pal Johan Dada Vis for lending his !) and are than recorded "as is". I don't get rid of surface noise. I don't tweak the controls. I'm not a sound engineer and when I rip an album that's been recorded by, say, Phil Ramone - I'll bring it to you the way Phil recorded it.
So that explains the surface noise on this share.
And as yet another aside: the hissing you hear on the loud passages of Merit's album (my previous share) is due to the quality of the press. You know that flimsy 70's vinyl ? The records that nearly bend double when you lift them off the 'table ?? It's an otherwise NM LP but what do you do ?

Anyway - here is the album:

side A
The Abominable Snowmann
I Got You Baby
Bare Hugg
Spirit Feel
Why Should We Not
L.S.D.
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

side B
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemenn
My Generation
Mr. Anello
Still I'm Sad
Tengo, Tango
Brother Jack
Sack O' Woe

Right now there's the Manfred Mann soundtrack to "Up The Junction" (1968) over at Planet Xtabay and three tracks from Manfred Mann Chapter Three (1969) at Earfuzz- both are well worth checking out.

I sort of lost track of Manfred Mann after Paul Jones packed up his harp and split so if thet turned into easy pop cack, I missed it.
The early albums, tho', always seemed classy blues sides - at least when the bizzers weren't making them record top 40 singles.
Check out the first albums, especially, if you can find it, '65's "The Manfred Mann Return" [Capital T6102]which doesn't seem to have cyberized yet.
